Suddenly, the games really, really do count.

That's because the conference schedule begins the day after tomorrow, Wednesday!

Here are numbers...

Over the next 4-1/2 weeks, the Wesley Wolverines (10-6) play 9 of 11 games against Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) colleges. None of the CAC schools have battled each other yet. All of but three have winning records so far. The Christopher Newport Captains have lost just a single match this season.

The Wolverines have 5 remaining games at home now; next 4 consecutive home games are all against CAC members.

Of the 6 road games still to play, 4 are in Virginia (against 3 CAC opponents) with the other two CAC contests held in Maryland (Salisbury) and Pennsylvania (York).

Wednesday's game...

First up, this Wednesday, October 1, a conference game against Penn St.-Harrisburg Lions in the Wentworth Gymnasium on the Wesley campus, Dover, DE.

These Nittany Lions have lost 6 in a row and 12 of their last 13 volleyball games. Their sole victory was a 3-1 match against the Rosemont Ravens. They also lost to Misericordia Cougars 3-0. Of course, the Wolverines defeated the Ravens last Saturday 3-0 (though the final set was a nail-biter), while dropping their Misericordia match 3-1 the week before last.

The Wesley Wolverines defeated the Centenary Cyclones (25-11, 25-14, 25-14) and the Rosemont Ravens (25-9, 25-11, 26-24) today, Saturday, September 27, at a tri-match held on the Rosemont campus.

The Wesley Wolverines head off to a tri-match tomorrow, Saturday, September 27, in the Philadelphia suburbs with their two games scheduled for the afternoon. 

The matches will be played at the Rosemont College Ravens' Alumnae Gymnasium, 1400 Montgomery Avenue, Rosemont, PA.

The Wolverines face will two opponents who combined have won just one game this season, while dropping a total of 26 contests. Here are the times:

“I first began playing volleyball in 2003 when I was in the fourth grade....

“I am a business marketing major, and the most important thing I have learned so far is how to get the job done right in the most efficient way, no matter what that job may be.”

“My favorite place to visit is most definitely Daytona Beach, Fla., because my family lives there and I only get to see them once a year during Thanksgiving.”

“I am a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee... Being a student athlete is a hectic, full-time job, and the SAAC program has allowed me to not only be a voice for the volleyball program but a representative of all student-athletes to make our careers in college as enjoyable as they should be!”

Highlight of the match was the opening set where the lead changed hands twice and the score was tied eight times. Wesley had 14 kills to Immaculata's nine in the set and only lost by four points.

Freshman #10 OH Tionne Graves-Brown (Sacramento, CA) has been named to the Capital Athletic Conference's (CAC's) September 23, 2014, Weekly Honor Roll.

As of 9/23, Tionne leads the Wesley Wolverines in kills (96), hitting percentage (.217) and service aces (30). She is second in diggs (127).

MIGHTY MACS THURSDAY

Wolverines will take on
Might Macs this Thursday

The Wesley Wolverines may find the Immaculata Mighty Macs a real challenge when they meet up this Thursday evening, September 25, in a contest played on the road near Malvern, PA.

The Mighty Mac are 9-1 to date, having lost just 8 sets in 10 games. Until last Saturday, when they drop a 3-1 match to the Rowan Profs, Immaculate was on an unbeaten 8 game winning streak. They have not lost yet this season on their own court with a home game scheduled tonight, Tuesday evening, still to be played.

The Wolverine's game will be held at 7:00PM in the 400-seat Alumnae Hall, Immaculata University, 1145 King Rd, Immaculata, PA 19345.

RUTGERS TRI-MATCH

The Rutgers-Camden Raptors will host a tri-match this Saturday, September 20, with Misericordia Cougars and our Wesley Wolverines.

The contests will be held at Rutger's Athletic & Fitness Center, 301 Linden Street, Camden, New Jersey.

If you go, rise and shine a little early on Saturday. Wolverine game times are:

Gwynedd Mercy Griffins take on
Wesley Wolverines this Thursday

The Gwynedd Mercy Griffins, 5-7 overall, are in town tomorrow night, Thursday, September 18, for a 7:00 PM game against the Wesley Wolverines in the Wentworth Gymnasium on the Wesley College campus.

The Griffins lost last Tuesday night 0-3 to Penn-State-Abington Lions, who the Wesley Wolverines defeated two weeks ago by a 3-1 score.

This is the Wolverines third home game this season. The team is 7-3 on the season and 1-1 at home.

This Thursday match might also be a preview of what's ahead for the Wesley Wolverines when they contest Rutgers-Camden Scarlet Raptors this coming Saturday morning in an away game. The Griffins also lost to the Raptors 0-3 last weekend.

Tania leads the Wesley Wolverines in kills (67), hitting percentage (.228), block assists (12), and total blocks (18), while tied for block solos (6). She also is second on the team in diggs (95).

LIONS GAME PREVIEW

Next venue
Wolverines on road to meet
Lincoln Lions this Tuesday

The Wesley Wolverines with their 7-2 record (6-1 on the road) will travel to Lincoln University, PA (1570 Baltimore Pike) for another away match tomorrow, Tuesday, September 16 at 7:00 PM.

They will challenge the Lincoln University Lady Lions, who started out strong by winning the first two sets of their season before losing now a dozen in a row in route to a 0-4 tally so far in games this season.

For fans attending, it is not that far from Wesley College – about 60 miles northwest from campus, 50 miles southwest from Philadelphia, and 60 miles north of Baltimore.

The game will be played in Manuel Rivero Hall, which houses a 2000-seat gymnasium.

FIELD HOCKEY GAME

Wolverine spirit evident
"Many individual teams,
all one family: Wesley!"

It's been said often, numerous ways, that the team and personal relationships really are the high points that are long remembered after college sports have ended, rather than most games and final scores.

Last night, however, it was all of that – teams, friendships, support, and a big final score, plus a huge dose of college spirit, for a group of Wesley College athletes.

The Wolverine field hockey team took the Richard Stockton Ospreys into overtime to notch a 5-4 win and improve to a 5-1 record on the year.

There was rain with a slight chill in the air. But that hardly sent home members of the Wesley softball and volleyball teams, who were seated together in the stands cheering for their fellow Wolverines on the field in the tough fought victory.

Then, they snapped a photo of themselves and sent it off to Juli Greep, head coach of both the volleyball and softball squads.

“Both volleyball and softball have been out together supporting other Wesley women's teams, especially field hockey and women's lacrosse,” said Coach Greep, noting also that many softball players have been at the volleyball home games, as well.

“This is the most supportive group of female athletes I've coached since I joined the staff in 2011,” said Coach Greep.

“These groups of young ladies are truly showing what it means to be a family and support one another,” she added. “I think you can see in the early successes of each female fall sports team this year that the support and effort is really helping pay off.”

Coach Greep remembered what senior outfielder #11  Brook Creighton (Rock Hall, MD) told the softball team last year: “we are all individual teams, but we are all one family... Wesley!”

Tatum Jones named to
CAC weekly honor roll

Junior #9 MB Tatum Jones (Georgetown, DE) has been named to the Capital Athletic Conference's (CAC's) September 10, 2014, Weekly Honor Roll.

Tatum led the team with 19 kills this past weekend as the Wesley Wolverines swept three matches from the Arcadia Knights, Penn State Abington Lions, and Trinity Tigers.

Volleyball home opener
packs stands for Wolverines

The stands were full with Wesley students, family, friends, and fans at the opening home game of Wolverine volleyball last night, September 9, 2014, in the Wentworth Gymnasium on campus.

One player was sidelined. Last year's kills leader, sophomore #1 OH Arnelle Akakpo (Rahway, NJ), sat on the bench with a bandaged knee from an injury picked up on the Wolverines' successful road trip.

FIRST HOME GAMES

Wolverines look for fan support at
first home games to be played this week

For the first time this season, the Wesley Wolverines will enjoy homecourt advantage in a few days as they host a couple of colleges for two midweek volleyball games.

► TUESDAY HOME GAME (September 9): 7:00 PM, Wesley Wolverines vs Goucher Gophers in the Wentworth Gymnasium at Governors Avenue & Fulton Street, Dover, DE.

PREVIEW: Over the past weekend, the Wesley College Wolverines lost just a single set in their three match sweep, while Goucher College Gophers (Townson, MD) did just the opposite, winning only one set as they drop three straight games at a very tough Johns Hopkins tournament. 

Still, the Gophers hold a 3-5 record, having impressively won three of their four opening weekend games in the prior week.

Kelli Wilkinson is the new head coach. Between 2002-2013, Coach Wilkinsom took Maryland high school teams to five conference championships.

The Gophers watched three key seniors graduate last spring, while now rebuilding with a team that has no seniors this year – i.e., four freshmen, a sophomore, and five juniors on the squad.

PREVIEW: The Rosemont College Ravens (Rosemont, PA), who have not completed a full week of their season yet, bring to Dover, DE, a 0-4 record. The Ravens also have a new head coach, Brian Phipps, who served as an assistant coach last season. He makes his home in Wilmington, Delaware, just north of the Wesley campus.

this weekend outside Philadelphia

The Wesley Wolverines are taking their 3-1 record on the road again this weekend. This time they are headed to North East Philadelphia for games on Penn State University's Abington, PA, campus.

The Wolverines will immediately face a challenge in the first contest of the afternoon.

Earlier this week, the Arcadia University Knights defeated the Bryn Mawr Owls by a 3-2 (22-25, 25-22, 24-26, 25-19, 15-13) margin. Last Saturday, these same Owls took 3-0 sets (25-19, 25-18, 25-17) from our Wolverines. The Knights have a 2-0 record on the season.

In Saturday's second game, the Wolverines will face the Penn State Abington Lions, who are 1-3 on the year with all their games to-date played on their home court, where, of course, they are playing the quad-match tournament this weekend.

In the evening, it will be the Wolverines against the Trinity Washington University Tigers, who are 0-3 on their young season.

Noted was that Meghan “broke the school career record for digs (978) in the Wolverines second match of the season.”

WEIGHT ROOM

Twice weekly workouts
Weight room conditioning
adds power, prevent injuries

“Volleyball is a power sport,” says Ray Weisenbarger, UCLA strength and conditioning coach. “It is explosive. It’s fast. That’s the way the game has to be played.”

Strengthening exercises also greatly reduce athletes' risks of injury.

Wesley Volleyball Head Coach Juli Greep agrees on all points. That's why the Wolverine volleyball players have become very familiar with the Wesley's Peter Bielfield Weight Room.

The room, recently upgraded with $20 million in improvements, may tout the college's famed football team on walls and floor, but twice a week it is crowded with the young women of the volleyball team.

“We go there throughout the season, based on the playing schedule” says Coach Greep. “We focus on core strength and injury prevention.”
